Baby Girl Born in India Worshipped as Hindu God for Growth on Face
A five-day-old girl born in India's Uttar Pradesh region is reportedly being worshipped as a Hindu god for being born with a facial protrusion that represents an elephant's trunk.
Locals in the Uttar Pradesh region are saying the girl's bulge on her face resembles the facial structure of Lord Ganesha, a Hindu god who has an elephant's head on a human body.
According to the Times of India, the girl was born with a protrusion likely caused by a gene mutation and malnutrition. The protrusion covers part of the infant's nose, representing a trunk.
The girl, who was born at 7 a.m. last Thursday in Kothi Lankram, has become a local celebrity as people from around the region gathered outside of her home to pay homage to her likeness to a Hindu god.
"My sister-in-law gave birth to a girl at 7:00 a.m. and her face looks exactly like Lord Ganesha," Rajani, the infant's aunt, told ANI News. "Everybody is saying she is an incarnation of the god. This is why whoever hears about her is coming here to get a glimpse of the baby and are making whatever offerings possible."
The father of the child told the Times of India that he hopes his baby's fame may help his family of six, as he reportedly only makes about $4 a day selling fruit.
The family has been told by doctors that they may seek reconstructive surgery for the four-year-old girl when she is older, if they wish.
