'Bad Boys 3' news, release date: Director teases new villains, says film will be R-rated

There's still a long way to go before "Bad Boys 3" hits theaters, but director Joe Carnahan has already dropped some major details about the highly anticipated third film in the "Bad Boys" franchise.

Not much is currently known about "Bad Boys 3" apart from its tile "Bad Boys For Life," and that Will Smith and Martin Lawrence will be reprising their roles as Detective Sgt. Marcus Burnett and Detective Sgt. Mike Rowley, respectively.

But in a recent interview with Collider, Carnahan said that fans' long wait for another "Bad Boys" installment will be worth it and that the film will probably be R-rated. He also dished about the multiple villains Marcus and Mike will be facing this time around.

According to Carnahan, coming up with a new antagonist wasn't all that challenging because "You've got all these years in the game, and you've made all these enemies, you've accumulated all this, so in that respect, it would be easy."

"It's not one person," he revealed. "It's a multi-headed hydra, I'll say that. It works beautifully," he added.

Carnahan also shared that he is aiming for an R rating for "Bad Boys 3," saying that he thinks this is doable given the success of such R-rated films as "Deadpool" (2016) and the "Matrix" trilogy.

With the "Bad Boys 3" director still working on the script, it looks as though there's still quite a bit of a wait before fans get to see Marcus and Mike back on the big screen. Lawrence also recently spoke to Collider, and while he admitted that he couldn't reveal any details about the upcoming film, he confirmed that it is definitely in the works.

"Well I can't confirm nothing, but ya know we're working on it," he said. "I talked to Joe [Carnahan], talked to Will [Smith], Tom [Rothman] over at the studio. Jerry Bruckheimer. Everybody's just doing their part trying to make it come together and get the right script," he added.

"Bad Boys 3" is currently slated for a Jan. 2, 2018 release.
