'Battlefield' TV adaptation release date news: EA game being adapted for television by Paramount and Anonymous Content
"Battlefield," the popular first-person shooter video game series developed by EA DICE and published by Electronic Arts, is coming to television.
According to Deadline, Paramount TV and production company Anonymous Content have announced that they have optioned the rights to the video game series and that they are adapting it for the small screen.
"Battlefield," which is set in realistic warfare settings, debuted in 2002 for OS X and Windows. It has since built a player base of over 60 million people. Since its launch, 11 games and 12 expansion packs have been released for the franchise. The latest installment, which is set during World War I, is scheduled to debut in October.
"Paramount TV actively seeks smart content from all sectors that will resonate with audiences and translate to compelling programming," Paramount TV president Amy Powell said in a statement about the "Battlefield" TV adaptation. "EA's 'Battlefield' has an incredibly dynamic narrative, coupled with a loyal fan base, which will allow us to bring this exciting and unique property to the small screen."
Powell went on to thank Anonymous Content's Michael Sugar for his "tenacity" in bringing the project to fruition. She also said that Paramount is looking forward to working with both EA and Anonymous Content.
"Michael's track record speaks for itself," EA Entertainment vice president Patrick O'Brien said. "Combined with his passion for 'Battlefield,' we cannot imagine a better team than Anonymous Content and Paramount for this project."
According to Sugar, Anonymous Content, in partnership with EA and Paramount, will work on the "Battlefield" adaptation "with the same commitment to robust storytelling that has made the game such a runaway success for nearly fifteen years."
The official release date for the "Battlefield" television adaptation has not been announced.
"Battlefield 1," the next game in the series, is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC on Oct. 21.
