'Bones' season 12 news: cast and crew talk about show cancellation, potential revival

The cast and crew of "Bones" may be sad to leave their respective series roles after season 12 wraps up, but they are facing the upcoming finale head on trying to hone a suitable end for its remarkable run.

During the recently held Television Critics Association winter press tour last week, Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz attended the event for one last time for the show. The two actors who play the dynamic married couple Brennan and Booth, respectively, were joined by series creator Hart Hanson and together they got candid on the cancellation of the show.

"It wasn't our decision," Hanson boldly said. "We were told it was our last year. It wasn't that we called the network and said, 'We'd like to finish it.' [But] I'm not sure anyone was terribly upset or terribly shocked that it would be our last year." While Deschanel chimed in saying: "We had a really good run. It would be ungracious of us to be fighting against them canceling us" after 12 seasons.

Accepting as they may be on their last hurrah, a little glimmer of hope regarding the possibility of future new outings has been teased by executive producer Michael Peterson. And at this time and age in which old properties are getting a new life either through a revival or a reboot, fans are wondering when this potential reunion might roll out. Unfortunately, as it turns out, Boreanaz is not fully sold on the idea although he is not ruling it out.

"Everything is possible in life, but I tend to like to go forward," Boreanaz said. "In general, I don't like reunions, and I don't like to go backwards. It's hard for me to answer that question."

As for Deschanel, she also treaded along the same lines as his co-star but admitted that she may want a bit of time off from it first before any sequel of sorts gets the green light.

Meanwhile, before all the long haul plans, "Bones" is still just in episode 3 of their 12-part series finale. In the upcoming episode the team gets embroiled in a retirement home mystery following the emergence of an old man's dead body in an acid dump site. The episode titled "The New Tricks in the Old Dogs" airs tomorrow, 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
