'Captain Marvel' release date, news: director won't be named until 2017

Back in August, it was reported that Marvel Studios has put Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter, and Lorene Scafaria on their shortlist of candidates to helm "Captain Marvel," and a few months ago, studio president Kevin Feige also mentioned that the film should have a director by the end of the year. But now it looks like the film's director will not be announced this month.

Variety film journalist Justin Kroll broke the news when he revealed that the studio won't be meeting directing candidates until 2017. Well, nobody is going to fault the studio for taking their time in choosing a director. After all, "Captain Marvel" won't be coming out until 2019, so they have a lot of time to look for the right people for the job. So far, Marvel has a good track record when it comes to picking directors for their movies.

Kroll also revealed that script treatment is almost done. Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman are developing the script for "Captain Marvel." LeFauve has worked on the script for "Inside Out," and Perlman co-wrote "Guardians of the Galaxy" with James Gunn.

Academy Award winning actress Brie Larson is going to be playing Carol Danvers, a superheroine whose powers are "off the charts," according to Feige. In an interview with Variety last month, the studio head explained how Larson was the right person for the role.

"With Captain Marvel, who has powers that approach a level that we haven't seen before in our films, you need to counter- balance that by finding somebody who is also very human and very relatable and can get into a groove with the audience, where they're willing to see her fly through the sun and punch a moon away from a spacecraft. At the same time, we need her to land and have relatable flaws," he said.

"Captain Marvel" is scheduled to premiere on March 8, 2019.
