'Chicago Fire' season 5 episode 9 spoilers: Casey faces major crisis at work; Severide becomes closer to Anna
Casey's (Jesse Spencer) issues won't be confined to his family life when "Chicago Fire" returns for its midseason premiere on Tuesday.
The back half of season 5 picks up with Dawson (Monica Raymund) and Casey finally meeting Louie's biological father. Firehouse 51's newlyweds must deal with legal matters in an effort to remain as Louie's legal guardians. On the other hand, Severide (Taylor Kinney) continues trying to help Anna (guest star Charlotte Sullivan) for her bone marrow procedure and starts a deeper relationship with her. However, when things don't go as planned, he finds himself spiraling back to his old ways. Meanwhile, Brett (Kara Killmer) tells Dawson about something that bothers her, while the responders get too competitive — much to Chief Boden's (Eamonn Walker) dismay.
Tuesday's episode will also see Casey encounter a major dilemma at work, according to reports. While responding to a call, Casey is forced to make a split-second decision, but it remains to be seen if he will eventually make the right one.
"He has to decide who he's going to save in a real Sophie's choice," executive producer Derek Haas told TV Guide. "It's going to be haunting, but it's also going to have ramifications that take up the next episode," he added.
If Casey's actions end up determining who survives the crisis, it is believed that this is something that's probably going to affect him for an extensive amount of time moving forward.
In addition, the next episode provides the 51 crew with a new pastime. Aside from causing irritation for Casey and Boden, it brings up a hidden talent that Herrmann (David Eigenberg) has somehow managed to keep from his colleagues for a long time. According to the EP, he may even use his skill to swindle his co-workers out of some money.
The fifth season of "Chicago Fire" returns on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
