'Chicago P.D.' season 4 spoilers: Will the detectives trust the team's newest member?
The squad's latest addition Kenny Rixton (Nick Wechsler) won't get the warm welcome he expects when "Chicago P.D." returns for the back half of season 4 this week.
"Revenge" alum Wechsler has recently joined the series to play the role of Kenny Rixton, Voight's former protégé. Rixton used to work with Voight back when they were in the department's gang unit. While Voight moved on to become a detective, Rixton stayed on to bust gangs. Most of the detectives won't immediately trust their new colleague when Voight brings Rixton into Intelligence.
Executive producer Matt Olmstead spoke with TV Line about Rixton's debut, and he explained why the squad doesn't feel too happy to meet their latest member. "They want to know the story: Who am I working with? Who am I trusting my life to?" the EP said.
It turns out that Voight isn't going to let the group know why Rixton was transferred to their unit or tell them about his backstory. Instead, he just wants the detectives to trust him on his decision to bring a new face in.
"He doesn't really mind them being a little destabilized, and he's not falling over himself to say, 'Hey, guys, accept him,'" Olmstead continued. "He's still coming from a point of view of, 'I run the unit. I brought him in. I say he's going to work out, [then] he's going to work out. So do your job,'" he added.
Spoiler reports say that each character will have a different reaction to Rixton's personality. Despite Rixton's past mistakes, Voight is determined to change him and inspire him to return to legitimate detective work — far from what he was used to in the murky and corrupt gang unit.
The fourth season of "Chicago P.D." returns on Tuesday, Jan. 3, with a crossover episode with "Chicago Fire" at 9 p.m. EST on NBC. The procedural drama will continue with its regular episodes starting Wednesday, Jan. 4.
