Former New York Jets and Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson has been released from a hospital in Orlando, Florida, after he was shot in his right shoulder early Sunday during a drive-by shooting that killed the driver of the vehicle Johnson was riding in, the police said.

Johnson, 29, was earlier admitted to Orlando Regional Medical Center in stable condition with a non-life-threatening injury. He is now recovering at home from the gunshot wound.

Following the incident, the police said the running back was not cooperating with their investigation.

Johnson was traveling in the passenger seat of a Jeep when another vehicle came up and the assailants shot at the occupants. The passenger side suffered a number of hits and Johnson suffered a wound in his right shoulder. The driver of the vehicle named Dreekius Oricko Johnson was hit in the head and died immediately.

The shooting took place when the vehicle that Johnson was traveling in stopped at a traffic light. When speaking to police later, Johnson said he saw "a car roll by and they shot."

The Orange County sheriff's department described Johnson as "uncooperative" after the running back failed to describe the vehicle or its occupants.

Following the incident, Johnson released a statement, expressing thanks to everyone for their "support and their condolences regarding the passing of my good friend."

Johnson said he is expected to make a full recovery, after which he will be back out on the field training.

The sheriff's department provided more details about the incident, saying in a report that the Jeep Johnson was traveling in was the specific target of the still unidentified assailants. The occupants in the vehicle were not related, the police added.

Johnson played for the New York Jets in the last season but was due to become a free agent on Tuesday as the team opted not to sign him to a contract last month. Johnson blasted the Jets' previous management team in a radio interview, saying it lied to him about his role in the team's offense.

Sunday's shooting marked the second off-the-field incident for Johnson this offseason. In January, he was arrested in Orlando, his hometown, and charged with openly carrying a firearm while aboard a vehicle. Johnson was released on a $250 bond.

Johnson is coming off the most frustrating year of his career. In his first season with the Jets, he recorded career lows in carries (155), rushing yards (663) and rushing touchdowns (one).
