Christians in India Protest Recent Rape of 75-Year-Old Nun
Christians in India are reportedly demanding that the country's government do more to protect their religion following a recent attack on a Christian school in West Bengal that included the rape of a 75-year-old nun.
The incident took place early Saturday during the robbery of a convent school in West Bengal. The nun was reportedly raped by the burglars after they stole money from the convent's school, located in Ranaghat.
The recent incident is one of many rape issues currently plaguing India. On Monday, Christians, students and others gathered in West Bengal and other places to protest the recent rape and attack on Christians in the majority Hindu nation.
Father Savari Muthu, spokesman for the Delhi Catholic Archdiocese told NBC News that the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has not provided "concrete action to protect Christians."
"We have to raise our voice against the atrocities. Christians will not tolerate this humiliation," Muthu added, arguing that India focuses on protecting the Hindu population while ignoring other religious minorities.
Some local media outlets are reporting that the rape of the elderly nun could have been an act of revenge, as the school has allegedly been receiving threats since a student was recently expelled.
"The principal of the school called me up and sought police protection. After receiving the complaint over the phone, I took the initiative of sending policemen there. The policemen rushed there and dispersed the troublemakers," senior police official Rajarshi Mitra told The Calcutta Telegraph.
