'Constantine' season 2 news 2016: Show's fate still hangs in the balance; Second season hasn't been picked up by a network?
After NBC canceled "Constantine" after only 13 episodes, fans of the series wondered if they would ever see the series and its star back on the small screen. There were rumors that one network has shown interest, but the series' executive producer quickly downplayed such, perhaps so as not to get fans' hopes up.
Recently, The CW picked up "Constantine" season 1 and has been streaming it on The CW Seed together with other TV shows based on DC Comics. Movie News Guide said that could be an indication that the series starring Matt Ryan would be given a new lease on life. There were even talks that "Constantine" season 2 would take over the time slot that "The Vampire Diaries" would vacate when it ends its eighth season.
In an interview last year, executive producer David Goyer gave his two cents on the show's cancellation.
"I loved 'Constantine'. In retrospect, I don't think it should have been on NBC. I think it was the wrong channel and I'm sure they probably agree with that as well," he told Variety.
Perhaps "Constantine" would do better if shown on a channel where it would appeal to its targeted fanbase. Proof of this was when Ryan made a cameo on The CW's "Arrow" as John Constantine and positive clamor from fans followed suit.
Nevertheless, series creator and executive producer Daniel Cerone was quick to dismiss speculations that The CW would pick up "Constantine" for its second season. He even took to Twitter to clarify this.
Apparently, contract agreements for The CW and The CW Seed are separate. Just because "Constantine" season 1 is airing on The CW Seed doesn't necessarily mean that The CW would adopt the show. Still, Yibada said Cerone is aware that fans want "Constantine" season 2 to happen.
For now, a second installment for "Constantine" is out of the question, especially since Ryan is currently working on "The Halcyon," a new TV series set in the 1940s. Who knows, though? A network could see its potential and decide to include it in their lineup of shows.
