World-renowned soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo recently announced that he would be donating $7.8 million to a charity focused on providing earthquake relief in Nepal.

Ronaldo told the French magazine So Foot that he would be donating the massive sum of money to the charity Save the Children to aid with relief efforts after Nepal was hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25, killing over 8,000 people and injuring over 18,000.

The famed soccer player also took to his Facebook page to encourage his 102 million followers to support the Save the Children charity, writing: "Help the children affected by ‪#‎NepalQuake‬ by supporting Save the Children's relief efforts."

According to So Foot, Ronaldo chose to donate $7.8 million, or 7 million Euros, in honor of his number 7 jersey that he wears when playing for the Real Madrid team.

The Save the Children website states that it "invests in childhood — every day, in times of crisis and for our future. In the United States and around the world, we give children a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm."

While a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on April 25, another massive 7.3 earthquake with an epicenter between Kathmandu and Mount Everest struck the country on Tuesday, with officials estimating that already 36 people had been killed and over 1,000 injured in the quake.

The United Nations World Food Programme has estimated that there are hundreds of thousands of Nepalese residents in need of food aid following the April earthquake, with many of the residents living in remote mountainous locations that pose a challenge for rescue teams.
