Days of Our Lives cancellation rumors: NBC head offers hope for series renewal
"Days of Our Lives" fans can still breathe a sigh of relief, at least for now, as NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt revealed that the long-running show might still be renewed for another season.
The network chairman talked to Deadline during the recently concluded Television Critics Association winter press tour to discuss the fate of the daytime soap opera. According to Greenblatt, they still have to decide whether to bring back the show or not.
"We haven't made decisions, but we like that show," the network producer stated. "I think we will know more in couple of months. As they age, these shows diminish, there is a lot of delayed viewing and very little linear viewing anymore, you have to keep looking at that."
Rumors about the cancellation of the soap opera that has been running for 52 years started after former FOX News commentator Megyn Kelly was hired by the network. According to reports, Kelly's contract comes with a new NBC daytime talk show. This led to speculations that the network is gearing toward canceling the soap to delegate the slot for Kelly's new show.
On the other hand, reports claim that there is no actual connection between the renewal of "Days of Our Lives" and Kelly's upcoming show. There is also a 60–40 odds of hearing a renewal announcement in favor of the show in the coming days.
NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke also shared her opinion about the fate of the daytime soap. "We hope that the show comes back," Salke stated.
The series centers on the lives of the Horton and the Brady families since it first aired in November 1965. It celebrated its 10,000th episode landmark in February 2005, while the show aired its 12,000th episode in January 2013. As of Jan. 13, the series already aired a total of 13,003 episodes since its first release.
