'Deadpool 2' release date, news and updates: Drew Goddard expected to helm; production to start early 2017
"Deadpool" is coming out to be the most successful R-rated movie to ever hit theaters, and 20th Century Fox is already expecting the sequel to start production early next year.
According to What's Filming?, a website that tracks the productions that will be taking place in Vancouver, the "Deadpool" sequel was originally supposed to start in January 2017, but it has since been pushed back to February.
This is most likely because of the recent departure of the movie's director Tim Miller. Deadline reported that he left because of "creative differences" with the developers. Miller reportedly wanted to make a big-budget movie, but the rest of the team wanted to continue the low-budget, raunchy vibe of the first one.
Miller's departure is what also led composer Junkie XL to quit the project. He said that not having Miller at the helm "doesn't feel right." Junkie XL was the composer for the first movie as well, and he has worked on other films like "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice."
A lot of drama has been surrounding the sequel, much like the first "Deadpool" movie which apparently took years to be developed by the studio. Nevertheless, with the production date coming so soon, Marvel could still be confident in the project even without the involvement of Miller.
"John Wick" director David Leitch is reportedly the top choice to helm the project after Miller left, but no official announcement has been made by the studio so far. Another possible director would be Drew Goddard, who already has some comic book experience when he helped develop Netflix's "Daredevil."
Fans expect the studio to find somebody suitable to replace Miller for one of the most anticipated superhero movies of 2018.
"Deadpool 2" is set to come out on Jan. 12, 2018.
