'Deadpool 2' news updates: Who's the most likely candidate to play Cable?

As soon as "Deadpool" started breaking several box office records since it was released in February, rumors of a sequel began surfacing online.

These rumors of a "Deadpool" sequel eventually were confirmed by 20th Century Fox in April. The studio announced that the "Merc with a Mouth" actor Ryan Reynolds will reprise his role, Tim Miller will be back in the director's chair, and the entire creative team will return as well. Yet aside from these, other details and updates on the sequel tentatively titled "Deadpool 2" have been scarce.

Lately, the buzz surrounding the sequel to one of this year's biggest surprise movie hits has become active again thanks to the wide interest generated by Cable, a powerful mutant character confirmed to appear in "Deadpool 2."

"Deadpool" movie fans who stayed until the post-credits were treated with a revelation from Deadpool himself that if there will be a sequel, Cable will be in it.

Since then some notable actors have expressed their interest in taking on the role. Among the first to have shared his interest is Stephen Lang, who starred in the widely acclaimed 2009 film "Avatar."

According to Collider, Lang shared a couple of tweets that apparently tried to stir up conversation. The Twitter posts published in February were of photos of himself showing off his muscles, and one has this message: "Let's lay some CABLE. You know I want it. This is pre-training. Thanks for spreading the word."

The posts have since been deleted.

Actor Dolph Lundgren was also vocal about getting a shot at the coveted role. In an interview with Nerdist earlier this month, the "Kindergarten Cop 2" actor shared that he dreamed of being cast as the time-traveling mutant Cable and explained why he was the perfect fit for the role.

Former "Hellboy" star Ron Perlman is said to be the last tough-looking guy who has openly campaigned to get the role. The "Sons of Anarchy" actor also took to social media, this time Instagram and Facebook, to launch his campaign. He emphasized his great resemblance to the character in the physical aspect, especially their white hair.

"I'm the only one with Cable's friggin hair!" he captioned one Facebook post. His Cable-related posts have garnered thousands of "likes" from his followers, which indicates a positive feedback on his open declaration to be part of "Deadpool 2."

Nonetheless, it will still be up to Fox — and the fans — to make the final decision on Cable casting.
