'Death Stranding' release date news update: 'Death Stranding' uses Guerrilla Games' Decima game engine
Hideo Kojima is once again in the limelight a little over a year after his heavily publicized split with Konami Digital Entertainment. And he is back with a vengeance. This time, he is partnering with Sony Interactive Entertainment to create "Death Stranding," and he took the time to discuss the game during a panel at the PlayStation Experience (PSX) event. Kojima was also joined on stage by Guerrilla Games' Hermen Hulst and Sony's Mark Cerny.
Kojima revealed (via Gamasutra) that they were teaming up with Guerrilla Games to develop "Death Stranding," and the game was using the same Decima game engine used in "Horizon: Zero Dawn." He said they settled for the game engine after only a few weeks of searching because they believe it's what they were looking for.
"It has to be technology and people, they cannot be separate. And in that regard, from the first moment I met Guerrilla I had a good feeling about this. The Decima Engine is very appropriate for working on open worlds," Kojima said.
He revealed that Guerrilla actually gave him the Decima engine's source code before any contracts were signed. "It's the treasure of Guerrilla, and them handing that to me made me feel very special," he stated.
Hulst explained that the Decima engine wasn't "just a rendering engine." He said it comes with its own artificial intelligence, physics and logic. In fact, it has an entire world creation tool.
It was also revealed that Kojima Productions was setting up a satellite team in Amsterdam so they could work hand-in-hand with Guerilla Games in developing "Death Stranding." Kojima said Guerrilla's company culture and approach to development sealed the deal for them.
"Death Stranding" is going to be a PlayStation 4 exclusive game. The official release date is yet to be revealed.
Meanwhile, here's a look at the full panel discussion at PSX 2016.
