'Descendants of the Sun' season 2 release date rumors 2016: Sequel gets canceled as director quits?
Things have been looking up for the possible sequel to the Korean worldwide phenomenon "Descendants of the Sun" season 2 after it was confirmed that plans are underway for the sequel. However, there are rumors it might get canceled after all.
According to the rumor mill, the director of the hit Korean drama, PD Lee Eung-bok, has resigned from the series, leaving the sequel without a helmsman. His resignation follows after Kim Eun-sok, writer of the original series that starred Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo, revealed she will not be directing the sequel anymore.
Now, fans are worried they will never get to see the continuation of the series that brought the two aforementioned actors to superstardom.
Well, if what the producers say are anything to go by, it looks like the world's favorite lead couple, which fans dubbed the "SongSong" couple, has never been included in the planning of the sequel to begin with. According to reports, the two have said no to the project owing to their busy individual schedules. In fact, "Descendants of the Sun" season 2's storyline will focus on the story of Sergeant Seo Dae-young (Jin Goo) and Lieutenant Yoon Myung-joo (Kim Ji-won).
Soompi reports that the sequel will probably have a 2017 release date. It might still follow the same military storyline, but this time around, it will have a "Criminal Minds" vibe to it and include an entirely different supporting cast.
"Descendants of the Sun" has gained international fame in the short period it aired over KBS, which is why the network decided to give season 2 the green light. Still, an official statement from KBS is yet to be released.
Everything written about the series' sequel should be taken with a grain of salt, as it is deemed pure speculation at this point.
In the meantime, keep tuning in for more updates and news about "Descendants of the Sun" season 2.
