'Elementary' Season 5 update, rumors, spoilers: Is there a developing romance between Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson?
CBS's take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic crime investigator novel with a modern twist is now returning for its fifth season. In the latest chapter of "Elementary," its lead characters Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) and Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) have a new set of cases to work on, plus a new prospect that may or may not bring more problems to their already complicated lives.
In spite of the new adversaries that the formidable tandem are facing this season, the fans have always wondered since one if Sherlock and Joan would develop some kind of romance, given how strong their onscreen chemistry have become in every crime that they solved together. Unfortunately, for those wanting to see the characters of Miller and Liu becoming lovers, it is expected that the two characters will be more like their original counterparts in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's creation.
As reported by Yibada, "Elementary" series creator Robert Doherty already mentioned that he wanted the show to stick to its original material, meaning that Watson and Holmes will remain as partners in solving crimes but anything above that relationship will not transpire.
Moreover, Liu herself said that her character and Holmes are not expected to develop a romance, not even in Season 5.
"We want to hold true to the literature of their relationship," Liu recently told CBS. "And how that develops into friendship, which is what drew people into the stories to begin with."
Liu thinks Dohery may have intended to have a woman around Holmes all the time, as he is not comfortable with women. The actress had directed three episodes of the series and will do that again in Season 5. While being complimented by Miller of her skills, she admitted it was not easy being pushed to the max.
Meanwhile, in the upcoming fifth season of "Elementary" Season 5, Sherlock and Joan will have a disagreement on whether they should help Shinwell Johnson (Nelsan Ellis) or not. Mobile N Apps provided the episode synopsis for Episode 5 titled "To Catch a Predator," revealing that Shinwell is having a hard time rebuilding his own life, lest finding a job because of his criminal records.
Joan has her own way to help Shinwell, but her way of helping the series' newcomer will be contradicted by Sherlock.
