'Emerald City' season 1 episode 4 spoilers: Tip meets the Cardinal Witches as Dorothy unleashes newfound powers on Oz

Some significant revelations were uncovered in the previous episode of NBC's new fantasy series "Emerald City," and things are undoubtedly headed to darker, grittier grounds as characters both familiar and not struggle to find their place in the land called Oz.

It seems that everything that could go wrong has already gone wrong in Tip's (Jordan Loughran) life since he left Mombi's (Fiona Shaw) house. After just finding out that he was born a girl all along, the conflicted Tip, now a she, took her frustration out on her best friend Jack (Gerran Howell) and accidentally pushed him off the railings to his death, or so it seemed. However, the synopsis for the next episode begs to differ.

Titled "Science and Magic," Jack's accident serves a life-changing purpose by leading him down an unexpected path where he meets a strange woman named Lady Ev (Stefanie Martini). Who could this woman be, and what changes will she bring to Jack's life? Will Jack ever see his friend Tip again, and will he be able to forgive her for what happened?

Tip, on the other hand, finds herself caught between the two powerful forces of the two remaining cardinal witches, the elegantly prim Glinda (Joely Richardson) and the eccentric drunk West (Ana Ularu). How she gets there and why remains a mystery, but she seems to be in a much better place than where she was before, as shown in the set photos shared by NBC.

But with West's ability to know a person's history and true nature, will Tip, whom fans of L. Frank Baum's book series know to be the rightful ruler of Oz, really be safe in their care?

But things are far from okay for the rest of Oz as the interloper Dorothy (Adria Arjona) gradually settles into her newfound powers. Having been instrumental in ending the life of the Witch of the East (Florence Kasumba), Dorothy has somehow inherited the dead East's ruby gauntlets, which seems to be the source of her weather-manipulating powers. And although Dorothy failed to tame the weather in the previous episode, she will soon enough unleash a force that could change Oz forever, as teased by the trailer for the next episode.

What connections did Karen (Gina Bellman) have with Oz, and how will this affect her daughter Dorothy now? Was it mere coincidence that the ruby gauntlets chose Dorothy as the successor to the Witch of the East, or is there a much deeper mystery surrounding it?

"Emerald City" season 1 episode 4 airs on Friday, Jan. 20, at 9 p.m. on NBC.
