Emma Watson 'Nude Photo' Threats Received From Hackers After U.N. Speech
British actress Emma Watson has revealed that hackers threatened to post online her alleged naked photos just 12 hours after she gave a rousing speech about women's rights at the United Nations last year.
The "Harry Potter" star said she and her family were shocked when she became the target of hackers, who earlier claimed to have had access to her most intimate pictures.
"The minute I stepped up and talked about women's rights, I was immediately threatened," Watson said as she participated in a live Facebook Q and A event promoting her HeForShe equality campaign and International Women's Day in London.
"There was a website set up that was threatening to release naked images of me, with like a countdown or whatever else. I knew it was a hoax. I knew the pictures didn't exist," she added, according to the Wrap.
The U.N. Women Goodwill ambassador was referring to emmayourenext.com, which threatened to release her alleged nude photos after she made an appearance at the U.N. in September last year.
"It was a wake-up call to people around me in particular who didn't think we had a problem with gender equality in Great Britain. People thought I'd be disheartened by this – but if anything, it made me so much more determined," Watson said.
"It made me so angry – and I realized that this is why I have to be doing this. If anything, if they were trying to put me off they did the opposite," she added, according to the Independent.
As the primary spokeswoman for U.N.'s HeForShe campaign, Watson has been trying to encourage as many men as possible to become advocates of gender equality.
The idea is simply that in order for gender inequality to disappear, the involvement and input of men is needed just as urgently as that of women.
Watson's Facebook page has more than 30 million likes, but she said just 200,000 men have signed up to her pledge for gender equality. You can do so on the HeForShe website.
