Fear the Walking Dead' season 2 spoilers, plot news: Group's reunion will take a while; Madison becomes a leader

After going their separate ways in the midseason finale, it seems the "Fear the Walking Dead" survivors won't be reunited any time soon.

At the end of the first half of "Fear the Walking Dead" season 2, Nick (Frank Dillane) went off alone to look for similar-minded survivors, Travis (Cliff Curtis) isolated himself and his increasingly dangerous son Chris (Lorenzo James Henrie), and Madison (Kim Dickens), Strand (Colman Domingo), Ofelia (Mercedes Mason), and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) left for the Abigail.

When the show returns with the back half of season 2, the three different paths taken by the survivors will allow viewers to explore the wider world post-zombie apocalypse, with new threats, characters, and locations to be introduced.

In a recent chat with ComicBook.com, "Fear the Walking Dead" showrunner Dave Erickson said that it will take some time before the survivors find each other again.

"It's going to be difficult because we eventually find out the boat is not as accessible as we had hoped, or as Strand and Madison had hoped," he said. Meanwhile, as Erickson explained, Nick will come upon a community of survivors who see the undead in the same way he does.

"We're going to quickly explore that and look into something with a darker side that goes with it, but initially he's not looking to get back," Erickson added. Season 2B will focus on Nick's journey and experience with the new community, which means that the former junkie probably won't be reuniting with his family anytime soon.

This doesn't mean, however, that his mom, Madison, will be giving up on her son. According to Erickson, Madison will take steps to try to get Nick back in season 2B. In the meantime, she and Alicia, her daughter, will have to deal with each other post-Nick's departure.

Speaking with Variety, Debnam-Carey said that in season 2B, viewers will find a more assertive version of Alicia.

"She's the one person that hasn't lost as much as everyone else," the actress explained. "It's the first time she's been able to step into that leadership role. She's putting down the role of daughter, the role of the child, and proving herself as an equal."

"Fear the Walking Dead" returns for the second half of its second season on Sunday, Aug. 21, at 9 p.m. EDT on AMC.
