The back half of "Fear the Walking Dead" season 2 will find the group splintered and taking on new challenges and threats in an attempt to survive the zombie apocalypse.

In the midseason finale, Madison (Kim Dickens), Travis (Cliff Curtis), Nick (Frank Dillane), Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), and the rest had split up into different groups following the fire that burned down the hacienda in Thomas' (Dougray Scott) compound. Despite his mother's pleas, Nick chose to go on his own in search of others who also believe that the undead are just another step in human evolution. Travis set off with his son, Chris (Lorenzo James Henrie), while Madison, Alicia, Ofelia (Mercedes Mason), and Strand (Colman Domingo) left the compound together.

"Now that the world has expanded, we can tell greater stories, we can explore different communities, and there are now not only more infected, but in order to survive, the stakes are even greater," "Fear the Walking Dead" executive producer Gale Ann Hurd says in the trailer for the second half of the current season. "Now that they're on shore, we get to see how suited to this environment they are. People will resort to much more violent measures. Some rise to the occasion and some fail."

As seen in the official trailer for season 2B, things are about to get even more dangerous and chaotic for the survivors with new herds of the dead and a scarcity of food and other supplies threatening their survival. Following Thomas' death, Strand is dealing with his "inner demons" as Ofelia battles suicidal thoughts, and Alicia butts head with Madison. Meanwhile, Chris is growing more dangerous, and Travis has to keep him away from everyone else. Nick chances upon a group of like-minded individuals as Madison and company come across a community of survivors taking shelter in a hotel.

"It's exciting visually and from a narrative perspective because I think we get to explore stories and characters that we are not accustomed to seeing," executive producer Dave Erickson says in the clip.

"Fear the Walking Dead" season 2 will return on Sunday, Aug. 21, at 9 p.m. EDT on AMC.
