First ISIS attack in Russia fails
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed full responsibility on an attack last Wednesday near a Moscow traffic police outpost where two jihadists armed with axes and guns attacked unsuspecting officers.
There were two officers who were injured in the attack, with one seriously wounded.
On the other hand, both attackers were killed by responding police. One was shot dead and the other was killed while resisting the officers, according to official investigations.
According to Reuters, ISIS released a video through Amaq News showing the attackers who declared their loyalty to the militant group. They said they will take revenge on Russia for its participation in the strikes against the Middle East.
The video identified the attackers' as Uthman Mardalov and Salim Israilov. Speaking in both Arabic and Russian, one of the attackers reportedly said, "We have taken the path of jihad (holy war) on the orders of our Amir Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi."
"We have called this operation 'revenge operation.' Revenge for you bombing our brothers, because you kill our brothers every day in Syria and Iraq. ... This will be the start of everything that will come to you," they continued.
Daily Mail said ISIS announced a holy war against Russia through a YouTube video last July. The Kremlin reportedly said that the threat will not stop them in their fight against terrorism.
Last week, a separate video featuring a masked ISIS jihadist spewed threats against Vladimir Putin, according to the Independent. He announced that militants will go to Russia and kill them in their homes.
Russia was targeted last year through the hijacking of the Metrojet Flight 9268 headed for St. Petersburg. All 224 passengers onboard died when a bomb inside the plane was detonated by ISIS terrorists.
