Well-known evangelical leader Frankin Graham has spoken out against a national atheist group that is attempting to have a cross removed from a small Kentucky town landmark.

Graham, who heads the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, recently took to Facebook to voice his support for the small Kentucky town of Wilmore, which is attempting to keep a Christian cross atop its local water tower despite threats from the Freedom From Religion Foundaation.

The cross, which sits atop the water tower that holds the city's name, was originally on property owned by the local Christian college Asbury University, but the water tower is now owned by the city.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation has reportedly contacted city officials to assert that the cross atop the water tower implies that the town officially endorses Christianity.

Graham has defended the local cross, writing on Facebook that the national atheist group is trying to disrupt the religious liberty of Wilmore residents.

"The Freedom From Religion Foundation is at it again. Reaching in from another state, they're trying to intimidate the City of Wilmore, Kentucky, into taking down a cross that has stood on top of their water tower for years," Graham commented.

The evangelical leader also commended Wilmore Mayor Harold Rainwater, who has said the cross is apart of the town's history and he fully plans to fight to have the cross remain.

"Way to go Mayor Rainwater! These anti-god activists are trying to get their way against the will of the people. Let's pray that they get nowhere!" Graham wrote.
