Franklin Graham Defends Ky. Clerk Refusing Gay Marriage Licenses
Famed evangelical pastor Franklin Graham has spoken out in support of jailed Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, arguing that our forefathers "gave us freedom of religion at a great cost."
Graham took to social media to slam recent comments made by GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump, who said in a recent interview with MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that he believes Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis should abide by the "law of the land" and issue same-sex marriage licenses despite her religious beliefs.
Davis was recently jailed for refusing to resign and refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
"[Trump] should know that just because something is made into a law, doesn't make it right. His Scottish Presbyterian ancestors may have been among those who had their heads cut off because they refused to recognize the King of England as head of the church," Graham wrote in a recent Facebook message.
"They believed that Jesus Christ was the head of the church, not the King of England; and they stood for — and died for —those sincerely held religious beliefs. Our forefathers gave us freedom of religion at a great cost, and that was meant for us to be able to live out our faith in our daily lives, at home and at work," Graham added.
Davis filed an emergency injunction over the weekend to make her exempt from the state and national law that orders her to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Davis' husband has said that his wife will remain in jail for as long as she needs to without having her religious beliefs jeopardized.
