'Friday the 13th: The Game' release date, news: closed beta update extended for a day
Gun Media officially launched the closed beta of "Friday the 13th: The Game" this week, and it will be extended for at least another day.
The closed beta that was launched exclusively for PC began Tuesday, Dec. 20. It was supposed to last until Friday, Dec. 23, but the game developer opted to be more generous by extending it until Saturday, Dec. 24. Yet only those who preordered the game can join the ongoing closed beta.
A gameplay analysis was posted by IGN through a 17-minute video, showing that players need to look for weapons that they can use to defend themselves against the vicious rampage of the "Friday the 13th" franchise's infamous villain — Jason Voorhees.
Based on the footage that was released by the publication, up to eight players can join the upcoming asymmetrical survival horror game in which one of them can choose to take on the role of Jason. The remaining seven, on the other hand, must find a way to escape Jason's murderous streak as he goes on a rampage at the Crystal Lake camp.
The game developer initially launched the game as "Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp," but they managed to get the permission to develop it into a new "Friday the 13th" video game from the franchise creator Sean S. Cunningham.
In an interview with PlayStation Universe back in 2015, the game's co-creator Ronnie Hobbs revealed how they succeeded in getting the go signal from Cunningham to develop the game. According to Hobbs, the development team received a call from Cunningham while they were still brainstorming for the game.
"After a lot of conversations and some awesome meetings, he said 'If my license will make your game better then you can have it.' We were like, "we can't afford a license. That's why we did Slasher Volume 1: Summer Camp.' and he was like 'no, this is a gift from me to you.' We got handed the best gift we ever hoped to be handed," he stated.
The "Friday the 13th: The Game" is expected to be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in early 2017.
