'Fuller House' news: Netflix renews spinoff sitcom for season 3
After its successful season 2 debut, "Fuller House" has been renewed by Netflix for a third season, which is set to air on 2017.
Last Dec. 24, fans received an early Christmas gift from the streaming platform when the show's renewal was officially announced through its official Facebook page. The day before the announcement, series creator Jeff Franklin teased the renewal with an Instagram post promising "big news." He later added an update upon realizing that he made a mistake on the date.
The "Fuller House" renewal order from the network comes just weeks after the 13-episode season 2 premiered. The show's freshman season was launched in late February of this year, with the announcement for the second season coming out early March. A definitive premiere date for the upcoming third season has not been announced.
A spinoff from the 90's sitcom "Full House," the hit Netflix comedy stars original cast members Candace Cameron Bure (as D.J.), Jodie Sweetin (as Stephanie) and Andrea Barber (as Kimmy). Many viewers tuned in when it debuted in February, and although Netflix never releases details about ratings, third-party analyst Symphony claims that "Fuller House" scored 14.4 million viewers in the 18–49 demographic during its first month of release. This is an impressive number, making the rookie comedy comparable to famed programs such as AMC's "The Walking Dead."
Season 2 included a guest appearance from the late Alan Thicke and yet another plea from the cast for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to come back and reprise their role in the show as Michelle. In an interview with People, executive producer Bob Boyett explained why the celebrity twins couldn't make an appearance on the sitcom. "Ashley said, 'I have not been in front of a camera since I was 17, and I don't feel comfortable acting,'" he told the publication. "Mary-Kate said, It would have to be me because Ash doesn't want to do it. But the timing is so bad for us."
The third season of "Fuller House" premieres next year on Netflix.
