'Game of Thrones' season 7 release date rumors, plot spoilers: Why Jon Snow and Meera Reed could be twins
"Game of Thrones" fans have already learned that Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is not Ned's (Sean Bean) son but his sister Lyanna's (Aisling Franciosi) son possibly with Rhaegar Targaryen. But one of the wildest fan theories about "Game of Thrones" predicts that another key detail about Jon's real family has yet to be revealed: that he has a twin and that this twin is Meera Reed (Ellie Kendrick).
Meera was last seen helping Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) escape from the White Walkers. Since the third season, Meera and her now-deceased twin brother Jojen (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) have been Bran's steadfast guardians in his journey north of The Wall to meet and learn from the Three-Eyed Raven (Max von Sydow). But is it possible that Meera has a bigger role to play in "Game of Thrones"? How could she and Jon possibly be related?
This theory has actually been making the rounds on the internet for a while now and was fueled by a comment made by "Game of Thrones" actor Alfie Allen, who plays Theon Greyjoy, to Vulture back in 2012. At the time, Allen said that Jon's true parentage involves a "Luke Skywalker situation."
As "Star Wars" fans know, Luke and his twin sister Leia were separated at birth and met each other as young adults. Similarly, the twin theory states that Lyanna gave birth to twins — a boy and a girl, entrusting both to Ned. To better ensure their survival, Ned decided to split them up, with him raising the boy (Jon) and his friend Howland Reed, his only friend/ally to survive the skirmish at the Tower of Joy, raising the girl (Meera). According to the theory, Ned's decision to keep the twins apart is the reason Howland and Ned had not seen or visited each other in the years after they fought at the Tower of Joy.
In a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Kendrick admitted that the Tower of Joy scene in season 6 seems to have proven that only one child was born to Lyanna. "It seems quite conclusive in terms of Jon's parentage," she said.
"I don't know. We've still never really seen where Jojen and Meera have come from. We know a little tiny bit about her father. We don't know anything about her mother, really. So yeah, I'm excited to find out who her parents are and what the situation is," she added.
But the actress wasn't ready to shut down the twin theory just yet.
"'Game of Thrones' always surprises us," she said. "I'm always surprised! I never have any idea of what's going to happen next. I never rule anything out," she continued.
If Meera and Jon really are twins, this would explain why the two have physical similarities, most obvious of which is the dark, curly hair they share.
"Game of Thrones" season 7 is expected to debut in summer 2017 on HBO.
