The wait for "Game of Thrones" season 7 is not yet over, but details about the eighth and final season of HBO's epic adaptation of George R.R. Martin's best-selling "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels are already coming out.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, HBO programming president Casey Bloys revealed that "Game of Thrones" showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are still undecided about the number of episodes of the show's final season. This means that they are still unsure if season 8 will only have a six-episode run.

"They're still figuring out the shape of the season, what they want to do," Bloys stated in the interview. "I'll take as many as they want to do. If they give me eight, I'll want 10. But it's really up to them. They'll let me know."

The cable network head also revealed that they are also hoping that "Game of Thrones" writers will agree to make a possible prequel since they believe that it would be a waste not to explore the story. "We'll take some shots at it. I'm not going to do it just to do it. It has to feel very special. I would rather have no sequel and leave it as-is then have something we rushed out," Bloys stated.

The HBO programming president explained that coming up with a prequel will be a more practical move instead of coming up with spinoff that will feature existing characters.

But while waiting for the final announcement for "Game of Thrones" season 8, fans of the series are expecting to see how Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) fights for her right to the Iron Throne as soon as she lands on Westeros in season 7. This means that she will have to face Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) who will do everything to stay in power. The power struggle in the North is also expected next season, since Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) seemed to be uneasy about letting her half-brother Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) lead Winterfell.

HBO has yet to announce the premiere date of "Game of Thrones" season 7, which is expected to come out Summer 2017.
