'Girl Meets World' season 4 news, updates: Star speaks up about show's fate; Online petition started for show's move to Freeform
Production for "Girl Meets World" season 3 has apparently wrapped up, but everyone involved in the show, cast members and production team alike, are clueless as to whether it will see a fourth season.
Currently, the show is airing its third season on Disney Channel, and it's scheduled to air until 2017. Nevertheless, there are rumors that the network is yet to order "Girl Meets World" season 4, something critics deemed unusual especially for a series that's doing good.
According to speculations, Disney Channel is having second thoughts about renewing the series for a fourth installment because its storyline is getting too mature for the network's audience. After all, Riley (Rowan Blanchard) and Maya (Sabrina Carpenter) are not getting any younger. Soon, they'll finish high school and will have to deal with real world issues.
Zap2It notes that the shows airing on Disney Channel cater to audience aged 2 to 14. Riley and her friends are currently in their second year of high school, and soon, issues such as romantic relationships and sex will need to be tackled. Apparently, Disney Channel feels such issues are no longer fit for their audience, which is why the outlet said it might be better to move the series to Disney Channel's subsidiary network, Freeform.
Recently, Blanchard spoke to SheKnows, and she revealed that she and her co-cast members are unsure regarding the fate of the show in Disney. She did say she would love for the show to continue if only to reach out to young girls out there and tell them what they need to know about growing up.
"I know as much as you do," the young actress admitted. "We are hoping for a Season 4, obviously, because we want to continue our story, and I feel like it's an important story to tell. But as of right now, we just finished [filming] Season 3 and we're still waiting on the word. But we do have more episodes coming out this year that air into early 2017, so we're covered for a little bit."
Meanwhile, fans of the series have launched an online petition titled "Move Girl Meets World to Freeform (ABC Family)" in an effort to convince Disney Channel and Freeform to sustain the show's life beyond three seasons. Both networks are yet to decide and make an official announcement on this matter.
At any rate, "Girl Meets World" season 3 is still airing, and episode 13, which is titled "Girl Meets the Great Lady of New York," will air Sept. 16 on Disney Channel.
In the meantime, stay tuned for more news and updates on "Girl Meets World" season 4 renewal.
