'Glee' Finale Spoilers, Plot News: '2009' Show to Feature Tribute to Cory Monteith, Back Stories on New Directions Kids

FOX

The two-hour finale of the TV series "Glee" will air on March 20, 2015. The episode is entitled "2009," the year the series premiered on Fox. It will feature a tribute to Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson in the show and tragically passed away in 2013.

Ryan Murphy, the show's creator, has always envisioned that "Glee" would end with a major Finn story. He said flashing back six years is one way to honor both the character and the life of the actor who played him.

"The final year of the show... was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn's story. I always knew that. I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was, he was in it. I knew what the last line was, she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens, you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do. So we're figuring that out now," Murphy said at that time.

The finale will fill in the back stories of the rest of the New Directions kids before their first meeting in the choir room. The emotional episode will feature Lea Michelle singing her very last song on the series called "This Time," written by her fellow cast member Darren Criss. It was reported that Michelle fell to her knees and cried while shooting the finale.

As emotional as it was for the cast and crew to complete the finale, it will also be bittersweet for Gleeks all over the world who went on the journey with the group of misfits from McKinley High from 2009 to the present, to finally say goodbye to a series that has revolutionized musical TV and has tackled never-before subjects bravely and with aplomb.

Talking about the filming of the final episode, the cast were of the opinion that Cory Monteith was there with all of them, in spirit, as they felt the presence of the actor who died of heroin overdose in 2013.

"He was there, though. We could feel him. He was there," Chris Colfer said.
