Google Nexus 7 release date, specs news update: Google scrapping the 'Nexus' brand for 'Pixel'

Google's Nexus line has always had a unique place in the market of smartphone users. It's considered to be one of the higher-end phones that are still much cheaper than Apple and Samsung. Google is reportedly scrapping the "Nexus" brand name in order to rename the phones "Pixel."

CNet speculates that the reason for the change in name was so that it wouldn't confuse the consumers when the product was compared to its competitors. Last year saw the release of the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. Although the phones belong to the same generation as the iPhone 7 and the Samsung 7 phone series, the numbering makes the devices seem out of place. There's also the matter of the currently existing Nexus 7 and 9.

With a new name for the product, Google can give the phones a new price range and a new "philosophy." People are speculating that when the Pixel is revealed, it will come along with another phone called the Pixel XL.

Some believe that the new device will be unveiled in San Franciso on Oct. 4. The device hasn't been confirmed but Google is definitely going to unveil something "rectangle-shaped" and people are speculating on what it could be online.

Some rumors about the specs of the device say that the Google Pixel, codenamed "Sailfish," will have a 5-inch display while the Pixel XL will boast a 5.5-inch display. The devices are also speculated to be the first phones to run on Android's new OS, the Android 7.0 Nougat. The two phones are also said to run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset.

The two devices are rumored to have the same amount of RAM 4 GB but the Pixel XL is said to have a larger internal storage of 128 GB. The Pixel will have about 32 GB of internal storage.

Many are speculating that the Google Pixel will be unveiled this coming Oct. 4, 2016.
