Gotham Fox Series Cast News, Plot Spoilers: Jada Pinkett Smith Confirms She Is Leaving Show?
Jada Pinkett Smith, who plays as the villainess Maria Mercedes Mooney also known as Fish Mooney, has revealed that she may not be returning for the second season of Fox's "Gotham" now that her one-year contract is over.
"I signed for a year, and the year is up," said Smith on her contract with the Batman prequel series during an interview on Live with Kelly & Michael.
When pushed further about her return in season two, she confirmed her good-for-one-season-only deal with the series: "I don't think so."
Den of Geek! Commented that the actress' seemingly farewell to the show might indicate her Fish Mooney's death, or it might be a good way to increase her talent's price tag.
"This would seem to indicate that Smith's character might be sleeping with the fishies by the end of season one," said the web site. And considering all season long has circled around Fish and Penguin's (Robin Taylor) seeming death spiral, it might be inevitable...
"...Or it might be a good way to raise your asking price for a second season contract renewal. After all, Gotham is now one of the hottest shows on television, and if Fox thinks keeping Fish Mooney around is worth it, I'm sure that Smith's agent will at least hear out what they have to say..."
However, Smith promised fans that the television series still has a lot of "great things" to show: "But there are some great things coming ahead on Gotham, believe you me. There's a lot of good stuff coming."
When Michael Strahan expressed hope that Fish Mooney "could show up anywhere," Smith agreed, saying: "Yeah, she could show up anywhere. You never know!"
Smith later told "Extra": "We're done."
Producers remained tight-lipped about what exactly will happen to Smith's character, who is also a nightclub owner aside from being a mob leader, but they hinted a little bit about her fate.
"Fish Mooney's storyline takes a lot of interesting twists and turns into the finale of season one of 'Gotham.'"
Bruno Heller's "Gotham" is set to air four more episodes this season.
