'Gotham' Spoilers, Recap: Joker's Origins Explored in Episode 'Blind Fortune Teller'
In its most recent episode, "Gotham" explored the origins of the Joker and some of the events that would cause him later on to become the chief villain to Batman.
The early part of the Joker's life was never dealt with in the comics that inspired the series, which airs every Monday at 8/7c on Fox, so this is where the last episode focused on.
It started with Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Leslie (Morena Baccarin) at the circus where an act was interrupted by a fight between the Grayson and Lloyd families who form part of the circus. Gordon intervened and then discovered that a promiscuous woman named Lyla was missing and that she was the cause of the fight. When he went to Lyla's trailer, he met her son Jerome (Cameron Monaghan), who claimed that he had not seen her all day.
This made Gordon suspicious. He then used Lyla's snake to locate her and it led him to her body. After his investigation, Gordon failed to find any trace of the killer. However, he was told by blind fortune teller Cicero (Mark Margolis) that Lyla spoke from beyond the grave and informed him that the murder weapon was in the park.
After Gordon found the weapon, he brought Jerome and Cicero in for questioning. He eventually discovered that Jerome had murdered his own mother and then cleaned up in the trailer of Cicero who turned out to be his father. Jerome then planted the murder weapon there. This led to Jerome breaking down and laughing like a maniac, hinting that he would eventually become the much feared Joker.
There were also several subplots in the episode. One revolved around Bruce (David Mazouz) as he dealt with the board members at Wayne Enterprises while suspecting that they had a hand in his parent's murder. Meanwhile Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) struggled to manage the nightclub and Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) took charge in the dungeon where she was being held captive. Mooney did this by asking for "basic necessities" whenever the management came to take one of the captives to have their organs removed. If there was no deal the captive was killed and not handed over. This tactic led to Mooney being summoned by the Manager in charge of the prison.
