Government Employee Admits to Drinking When Drone Crashed Into White House
The Secret Service has now announced that the government employee who flew a drone into the White House earlier this week was inebriated when he did so.
The drone crash caused a temporary lockdown at the White House in the early hours of Monday morning when an unnamed government employee accidentally crashed the quadcopter into the southeast side of the White House, causing the drone to become suspended in a tree.
According to the New York Times, the employee, who has not been named by the Secret Service, had reportedly been drinking at an apartment nearby when he decided to fly his friend's recreational drone, accidentally crashing it on White House property.
The employee reportedly texted his friends about the flub, and awoke the next morning to see the drone all over the news. He then contacted his employer, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, as well as the Secret Service.
The Secret Service is now reportedly working to corroborate the employee's story, although they've said they have no reason to believe the employee had been lying. Officials have confirmed that no camera was found on the drone.
"We don't yet have the legal structures and the architecture both globally and within individual countries to manage [drones] the way that we need to," Obama said in a recent CNN interview in regard to the incident.
"The individual has been interviewed by Secret Service agents and been fully cooperative. Initial indications are that this incident occurred as a result of recreational use of the device," a statement from the Secret Service said.
