'Homeland' Season 4 Spoilers: Mathison Active Again

Some viewers thought that things were going to go all the way downhill for Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) of "Homeland" after her breakdown in Season 4, Episode 7 ("Redux").

That didn't happen. Showtime says in Episode 8 ("Halfway to a Donut'), Mathison will again be active and hot on the trail of Haissam Haqqani (Numan Acar), the terrorist leader.

From that alone, Episode 8 of "Homeland," which will air on Sunday, Nov. 16 over Showtime, looks set to deliver another interesting story.

It looks like actor Mandy Patinkin made a wise decision some years back to leave "Criminal Minds" (where he was then the main lead), so that he could take on the role of former CIA director Saul Berenson in "Homeland."

That's because as the mentor of Mathison, Berenson is unavoidably linked to her, even if he may no longer be her boss. Such a situation is highlighted in Episode 8 as Mathison mounts "a last-ditch operation" to prevent Berenson from meeting a terrible fate at the hands of Haqqani.

Still, Mathison can't do this on her own. It turns out that her current boss, CIA Director Andrew Lockhart (Tracy Letts), is working with U.S. Ambassador Martha Boyd (Laila Robbins) to prevent Pakistani intelligence from figuring out what Mathison is up to.

However, in the episode promo, despite the fact that Mathison is dead set on saving Berenson, her former boss does not share her intention. Instead of being thankful and hopeful about his possible salvation, Berenson is firm in not getting released through a CIA operation, whether direct or indirect. In fact, in the promo, Berenson even says to the CIA and the Pakistani ISI ""Don't do it," and "Tell them to go to hell!"

Will Mathison save Berenson? Tune in to Episode 8 of "Homeland" next Sunday to find out.
