HTC One M9 Specs, Problems Review: Overheats to 130 Degrees Fahrenheit in New Test
The newly launched HTC One M9 recorded temperatures of up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit when it was subjected to a benchmark test recently by a Dutch website.
HTC quickly reacted, saying the test was "illicit" and pointing out that the software on the device was not yet final.
The news about the overheating was picked up and reported in various websites. Some sources put the blame on the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC on the device.
Last month LG, which is also using the Snapdragon 810 chipset on its upcoming G Flex 2, released the results of tests which showed that the Snapdragon 801 running at higher temperatures and used it to justify its decision to use the newer and cooler chipset.
Samsung, which just released its Galaxy S6 flagship, decided to bypass the Snapdragon 810 and instead use its homegrown Exynos chipset after it discovered that the chip from Qualcomm was overheating.
The test that showed the HTC One M9 overheating was a GFXBench benchmark and was run simultaneously on a number of smartphones and phablets including the iPhone 6 Plus, HTC One (M8), LG G3 and Galaxy Note 4. The test showed that the HTC One M9 heated up to 131 Degrees Fahrenheit while the Galaxy Note 4 was coolest at 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Soon after the overheating was reported by Tweakers, a Dutch website, the Online Communications head of HTC, Jeff Gordon, stated in a tweet that since the software on the flagship smartphone was not final, the test was illicit. This implied that the company was aware of the issue and was working to mitigate it by updating the software on the device.
When used for other activities like playing 3D games such as Asphalt 8, the HTC One M9 was much cooler at 107 degrees Fahrenheit. However, GSMArena noted that even when it came to games, the smartphone was much hotter compared to others which all registered temperatures around 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
