'Interstellar' vs 'Big Hero 6' Box Office: Disney Movie Wins
The space explorers of "Interstellar" didn't do too well at the box-office when ranged against the high-tech heroes of Disney's "Big Hero 6."
"Interstellar" wasn't lacking in high quality special effects and star value, with Matthew McConaughey in the lead. However, the Chris Nolan-directed movie was not able to capture the strong family market that "Big Hero 6" smoothly charmed into watching.
It's not a big deal for "Interstellar" though. Its $50-million box-office take is still highly impressive. It's just that with "Big Hero 6" earning $56.2 million for its debut, the winner at the box-office clearly flies high.
McConaughey did well in his role as Cooper, the leader of the interstellar crew out to explore the unknown for the benefit of the human race. In fact, McConaughey, who is well-known for his convincing display of a wide-range of emotions, had his work cut out for him as a father who has to choose between seeing his children again, or securing the future of humanity.
Yet, even with that dramatic highlight (along with several others experienced by Cooper's crew as they go through the wormhole in space), the story of a child prodigy and his plus-sized inflatable robot friend was still hard to beat.
The "Big Hero 6" opening weekend take was only second to that generated by "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" which took in $65.5 million from Aug. 8 to 10.
The box-office performance of "Interstellar" closely follows that of another drama adventure movie with a space orientation, "Gravity," which opened in October 2013 with a $56-million box-office take..
