iPhone 8 release date, news: Apple to ship 3D photography on next iPhone flagship in partnership with LG
Speculations about iPhone 8 specs are on a roll recently. The latest info notes that Apple will introduce 3D photography in partnership with the South Korean electronics firm, LG.
A source spoke to the Korean Economic Daily publication and said, "Apple is now studying how to apply its 3D camera technology into LG Innotek's smartphone camera. Since LG Innotek also has its own 3D camera and related technologies, such joint efforts will likely to bear fruit sometime within next year."
In relation to the plans of 3D photography, Korean Economic Daily recounts that Apple acquired the Israeli company LinX for $20 million last year and subsequently obtaining LinX's 3D camera technology.
To make 3D photography happen, the dual camera feature is requisite which is already present in the iPhone 7 Plus and is being supplied to Apple by LG Innotek. Meanwhile, LG has also developed its own 3D photography technology.
If Apple is, indeed, shipping a 3D photography-capable smartphone next year, there is a good chance that it will be featured in more than one iPhone release in 2017.
As earlier reported, Apple might possibly introduce three variants of iPhone next year. According to noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will not skip on iPhone 7S release for next year. It will be launched alongside iPhone 8 with organic light-emitting diode (OLED).
Among the three variants, Kuo speculates that mid-range 5.5-inch and the higher-end iPhone 8 variant will both sport dual-lens camera; thus, the possibility that they both carry the 3D photography feature.
Recently, iPhone 8 is also speculated to feature an all-glass bodywork to pave way for an efficient wireless charging. As earlier reported, the glass bodywork ensures that the wireless charging will work on a fast charging speed since metal alloys will prevent it from happening.
iPhone 8 and other iPhone 7S variants are expected to be released sometime in the second half of 2017.
