iPhone 8 release date, specs, news: Apple wants OLED for its next flagship but there are limits with suppliers
A recent Bloomberg report has noted that Apple plans to equip its next iPhone release with an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen. But the problem is that the company's display suppliers might not be able to keep up with the iPhone demands.
The report came from tips from insiders close to the issue, noted Bloomberg. The main four suppliers for iPhone's display panels are Samsung Display Co., LG Display Co., Sharp Corp. and Japan Display Inc. Out of the four, Samsung Display Co. is taking the lead to becoming the sole supplier of screen components for the next Apple smartphone dubbed the iPhone 8.
It can be recalled that a few weeks ago, Sharp president Tai Jeng Wu told a batch of graduating students that Apple will jump to OLED screens for the iPhone 8. Bloomberg quoted the Sharp boss recently saying, "There is all this talk about OLEDs, but I'm not at all sure about their future. We need to work on developing the technology, but whether we can succeed remains to be seen."
If this supply problem persists, Bloomberg speculated that Apple might resort to major change of plans such as shipping the OLED screens to just one model or just introducing the technology on a later timeframe.
Meanwhile, as for supply chain analyst Dan Panzica, "Apple has already figured in there will be high demand for the OLED model and they've also figured out there will be constraints to these panels."
According to Bloomberg, an Apple spokeswoman has declined to comment on the matter.
It has only been a couple of months since the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were released in the market. But speculations are already rife about what to expect from the next iPhone product. It is expected to come with a bang since next year will be the 10th-anniversary of Apple's iPhone line.
