Jada Pinkett Smith Leaving 'Gotham' After Season Finale: Fish Mooney Will Go Out With a Bang
Jada Pinkett Smith has confirmed that she will be leaving "Gotham" as the Falcone crime family lieutenant Fish Mooney at the end of the season. She said she committed to do a year, and the year was up. She also added to Extra that Fish, her character, will go out with a bang in an "...awesome finale."
Maria Mercedes Mooney, more popularly known as Fish Mooney, is an imposing, hot-headed and notoriously sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner, with street smarts and almost extrasensory abilities to read people like an open book, one who is not to be crossed. Mooney famously broke Oswald Cobblepot's leg giving her little "Penguin" his signature limp.
Pinkett Smith's character Mooney was a very distinct and larger-than-life character on the first half of Gotham's first season run. But after getting on the Don's bad side, Mooney had been relegated to a dank basement repository filled with non-elective organ donors. In a recent episode, in trying to stage a coup against her captors, she used a spoon to carve out her own left eyeball – which was replaced by Dr. Dulmacher with a mismatched sphere.
Pinkett Smith has said that she has always been a comics fan and it was a dream for her to be a part of the origin story of Batman with an original character. She had been thrilled to have been able to play a villain for a change. Back in January 2015, "Gotham" has already been renewed for a second season by Fox.
The producers, in response to Pinkett Smith's announcement about leaving the show, released the following statement: "Fish Mooney's storyline takes a lot of interesting twists and turns into the finale of Season One of Gotham."
Pinkett Smith will soon be back on the big screen in "Magic Mike XXL" with Channing Tatum, Amber Heard and Elizabeth Banks. The movie will be released in cinemas on July 1, 2015.
