'Jane the Virgin' season 3 episode 11 spoilers: Jane copes with painful loss; EP explains why major character had to be killed off

Jane (Gina Rodriguez) realizes the struggles of working in the publishing industry on the upcoming episode of The CW's hit dramedy, "Jane the Virgin" season 3.

Titled "Chapter Fifty-Five," next week's episode will see the characters attempt to work out their personal issues. According to the official synopsis, Jane learns that working in publishing is not what she imagined it to be. However, a showcase for new writers changes her perspective. As Petra (Yael Grobglas) continues to helm the Marbella, she decides to rebrand the hotel. Her plans won't run smoothly when she butts heads with the rival hotel next door.

Rogelio (Jaime Camil) makes a new agreement with Darci (guest star Justina Machado), leading to a strained relationship between him and Xo (Andrea Navedo). Elsewhere, Jane and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) try to think of the best way to address Mateo's behavioral issues. Another conflict arises when they both seem to have different ideas to solve the problem.

The CW released a new promo for the episode, and it previews Jane breaking down after learning about Michael's (Brett Dier) death. Rafael holds her as she cries, while the next scene shows Alba (Ivonne Coll) trying to comfort her. "We need to let some light in," Alba tells her granddaughter, who appears to be very devastated.

Monday's episode shocked fans with a plot twist that led to Michael's unexpected death. Speaking with TV Line, series creator/executive producer Jennie Urman discussed why they decided to put Jane through a very difficult moment.

"I wanted to tell a big story. ... Part of it is for the character, part of it is for the show," she explained. "Part of it is because this is a soap, and [you] need to keep things fresh and have big events happen and watch how characters spin out from those. Part of it is personal, experiencing loss in life and wanting to mine how one moves on and remains hopeful and optimistic," the EP went on to say.

The third season of "Jane the Virgin" airs every Monday night at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
