Jerusalem Synagogue Attacked By Palestinians Wielding Meat Cleavers
Two Palestinian attackers reportedly entered a Jerusalem temple Tuesday and killed four Israeli worshippers, as well as injuring six.
The two men reportedly entered the West Jerusalem synagogue Monday morning, armed with a pistol and two large meat cleavers, and began attacking Jewish worshippers. The attackers, who reportedly lived in East Jerusalem, were shot dead at the scene by police.
Of the four rabbis that were killed during the prayer session, three held dual U.S.-Israeli citizenship. The U.S. State Department has released the names of the three Americans killed in the attack as Mosheh Twersky, Aryeh Kupinsky and Cary William Levine.
Witnesses of the attack recalled the bloody, horrific scene they witnessed that took place during a peaceful, silent prayer period at the synagogue.
"Everybody was praying peacefully without any disruptions whatsoever and then all of a sudden the terrorists go into a place of worship and peace and turn it into a killing nightmare," Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld Rosenfeld told BBC Radio 4.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that Israel "will respond decisively to the horrific murder of Jews who came to pray and were killed by despicable murderers."
U.S. President Barack Obama has also spoke out on the attack, saying: "There is and can be no justification for such attacks against innocent civilians."
According to Fox News, some in the Gazan city of Rafah reportedly celebrated Tuesday's attack by passing out candy and holding signs with axes drawn on them.
