'Jumanji 2' release date, cast news, plot rumors: Upcoming movie confirmed to be a sequel and not a remake
The new "Jumanji" film has been confirmed to be a sequel to the original film that premiered back in 1995. Meanwhile, it is expected that Jumanji will now be a digital board game in the film due to the big gap before the sequel came out.
More than two decades since the original film came out, the sequel, "Jumanji 2," is expected to hit theaters in December 2017. Furthermore, it was confirmed by lead star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, in one of his Instagram posts, that the title is actually "a continuation of the awesome JUMANJI story" and not a reboot.
According to Digital Spy, Johnson will be portraying Dr. Smolder Bravestone, an explorer and avatar from the Jumanji game. The other avatars are Moose Finbar (Kevin Hart), Professor Shelly Oberon (Jack Black), and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan).
However, Karen confused many as to who she will really portray when she posted a photo on Instagram along with two other doubles with the caption "Three Martha's ready to kick some ass in the jungle."
Since the big actors are only portraying avatars, a set of young stars will be controlling them in the game. These players will be Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Ser'Darius Blain, and Morgan Turner.
Other actors expected to make an appearance in "Jumanji 2" are Nick Jonas and Rhys Darby, although who they will appear as are not yet revealed.
Plot details about how "Jumanji 2" will play out have not yet been confirmed, but Mashable reporter Jeff Sneider shared on Twitter a short synopsis for the film.
"JUMANJI sequel said to follow 4 teens in detention who get sucked into the game, where they take on new 'avatar' forms to locate a jewel," the post read.
The film is also said to pay a tribute to the late star who played the lead role in the original "Jumanji" film, Robin Williams.
"Jumanji 2" will be headed by "Bad Teacher" and "Sex Tape" director Jake Kasdan. With Kasdan's influence, there might be a presence of adult comedy in the film.
"Jumanji 2" is expected to hit theaters on Dec. 22, 2017.
