'Jurassic World 2' news: director J.A. Bayona wants to the take the sequel to a 'place that wants you leaving more and more'

Colin Trevorrow has busted open the door wide open for the revitalized "Jurassic Park" franchise in the monstrous 2015 film, "Jurassic World." Now, it is in director J.A. Bayona's hands to live up to the expectations of helming the sequel to a booming series.

The keys to the contemporary sci-fi trilogy have been handed to Bayona after Trevorrow opted to drop out from the franchise to helm the third movie of the ongoing "Star Wars" saga sequel. Despite that, Trevorrow remains to be very involved in a lot of ways including him still keeping his executive post role and even sharing notes with his successor in terms of where "Jurassic World 2" could be headed. In a recent chit-chat with The Playlist, Bayona reveals that he was actually surprised at how much his predecessor is willing to collaborate in terms of idea.

"I think Colin did a great job in the first one finding the balance between what people are expecting and what people are being again," he said. "I was kind of surprised when he pitched me the story because it leads the story to a place that we've never seen before and it brings some of the most important elements from the other films and makes something with them. I thought that was very interesting. It's the second chapter of a trilogy so it gets the story to a place that wants you leaving more and more."

Admittedly, Bayona went on to say that while the franchise has once again recaptured majority of the viewing public's attention, he still needs to up the ante in a way that it is just not a rehash of any of the previous four releases. Middle sequels have sometimes suffered stagnancy in story, which does not do anything to further the series whatsoever and that is what "Jurassic World 2" needs to be careful about.

"I think what is tricky about doing the fifth movie of a franchise is how will you bring in new stuff and still pay tribute to what we all know and the legacy of the film," Bayona pondered. "So, it's the balance between the new stuff and the old stuff."

"Jurassic World 2," which has yet to nab an official title, is scheduled for a June 22, 2018 release date. Leads Chris Pratt who plays Owen, Bryce Dallas Howard who plays Claire and the rest of the pack will jet-set to Hawaii in early 2017 to commence the movie's production.
