'Kingdom Hearts 3' release date, news: Director hints at massive installment
Though there is little information about Square Enix's crossover action role-playing game "Kingdom Hearts 3," fans expect the newest title be a massive addition to the franchise.
At this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), which was held from June 14 to 16, the video game developers revealed that the title is in the works. The game was announced alongside "Final Fantasy XV," which will be launched this November.
According to reports, "Final Fantasy XV" co-director Hajime Tabata took over the project so that "Kingdom Hearts" series director Tetsuya Nomura could focus on the upcoming "Kingdom Hearts 3." However, since Nomura has also been assigned to direct "Kingdom hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue," his attention will be divided between the two upcoming titles.
In an interview with Famitsu at this year's E3 convention, Nomura revealed that the third title will have a connection to "Kingdom Hearts 2.8." The third title is going to be a massive installment, Nomura said. Hence, fans of the franchise should revisit the previous games to prepare for the upcoming storyline.
Sora is expected to return as the main protagonist in "Kingdom Hearts 3." The character will be joined by other regulars — Goofy, Donald Duck, King Mickey, Master Eraqus and Master Xehanort. The next game is expected to continue the storyline from "Dream Drop Distance," wherein Sora, Goofy and Donald will go on a journey to search for the seven masters of light.
An initial announcement revealed that "Kingdom Hearts 3" will be launched on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
However, when the Xbox Japan website recently retracted the game from its online listing, reports have speculated that the video game developers will be making the title a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Since Square Enix and Microsoft Store still links the upcoming title with the Xbox One, many are convinced by the recent theory.
On the other hand, the promotional materials for the title still suggested that the game will be launched on both platforms.
