Legendary guitarist Carlos Santana reveals how his Christian faith saved him after multiple suicide attempts
Rock and Roll legend Carlos Santana revealed how his faith in Jesus Christ helped him overcome depression after his wife, Deborah, left him after 34 years of marriage.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the Grammy Award-winning guitarist admitted that he attempted to commit suicide seven times after his marriage ended, and it was only through God's grace that he is still alive today.
The musician recounted that he heard accusing voices saying his life was very miserable, but Jesus' voice provided him with hope and renewed joy that he never found in music.
Santana narrated that he grew up in a dysfunctional family and that he was abandoned by his father. He said that he was repeatedly molested by a friend's father a tender age of 10.
The incidents of molestation instilled guilt and fear in him as a boy, but with the help of God's grace he was eventually able to move past the anger toward his abuser.
"I was able to remove the anger by forgiving that man.... Forgiveness, man, forgiveness is incredibly liberating. And I'm here to tell you, with all my heart and spirit, that it can be done. You can be freed," he said in a 2008 interview with Rolling Stone.
The guitarist soon found out that his life is in the hands of God and he had learned to trust His plans for his life through his past experiences. His father's abandonment, his molestation and his divorce made him realize that it is only by God's grace that a man can survive.
"You have to go through the darkest night of the soul to get to the brightest light of the day," he said, according to an article published by Plain Truth Ministries.
In 2015, rumors of Santana's death circulated on Twitter on Facebook, but his agent, Michael Jensen, told USA today at that time that the musician is "alive and well and enjoying his morning!"
The Mexican-American guitarist had previously expressed his plan to retire as a musician in 2015 to become a pastor so that he could help people who are going through difficulties in their lives. He noted that he still does not know how the plan will unfold, but he insisted that "God is not done with me."
Santana has won 10 Grammy Awards and has sold more than 100 million records with hit songs such as "Oye Como Va" and "Maria Maria." He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, and he was listed number 15 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
