LG has just launched its flagship smartphone, the G4, positioning it squarely as a rival to the Galaxy S6 from Samsung. In promoting the phone, LG claims that the camera on its device is much better than the version on the S6 and that its device can match the speed of Samsung's latest phone. Here is how the two compare.

Design

The Galaxy S6 looks different from the LG G4, thanks to its metal frame and Gorilla Glass 4 on its back panel. This gives the Samsung phone a sophisticated and polished appearance. As for the LG G4, its manufacturer tried to get the same sophisticated appearance but chose to stick with a plastic body. The LG G4 base version has a polycarbonate back with a diamond-like pattern in three colors: white, gold, and grey. There are also leather back covers that have been dyed with natural plant-based dyes. Each has a seam running down the middle which allows the phone to be held easily. The entire phone has a slight curve running down its length which allows for easier use and better durability in the case of drops.

Display

The display on the LG G4 is bigger. Its IPS LCD screen measures 5.5 inches with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels and a density of 538 pixels per inch. The Galaxy S6 has a similar resolution but has a smaller Super AMOLED screen, measuring 5.1 inches with a density of 577 pixels per inch.

Specs

In terms of specs, LG claims that the G4 could match the speed of the Galaxy S6 but it does not have an octa core processor. Instead, LG opted to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset, along with a hexa-core CPU with two Cortex-A57 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.44 GHz, and an Adreno 418 GPU. Coming to the Galaxy S6, it has an Exynos 7420 chipset, along with an octa-core CPU with four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz and four Cortex-A57 cores clocked at 2.1 GHz and a Mali-T760MP8 GPU.

Memory

There is no memory slot on the Galaxy S6, but the LG G5 has one that can be used to add up to 128 GB of external storage. As for RAM, both devices have 3 GB onboard.

Camera

Both the Galaxy S6 and the LG G4 have the same 16 megapixel camera at their rear with optical image stabilization. However, the LG G4 has an 8 megapixel camera in front while the Galaxy S6 has a 5 megapixel version.

Price

The price for the unlocked version of the LG G4 with a plastic back panel could be around $768, but its price with a two-year contract could be around $199. As for the Galaxy S6, it costs $199 with a two-year contract.
