Lupita Nyong'o Oscars 2015 Dress News: Thief Returns $150,000 Dress, Says Precious Gems Were Fake
A dress that resembles the $150,000 outfit worn by actress Lupita Nyong'o at the 2015 Academy Awards ceremony was recovered two days after it was reportedly stolen, the Los Angeles Police have confirmed.
The white Calvin Klein dress – adorned with about 6,000 natural white pearls – was found in a bathroom of the same luxury hotel in Hollywood where it was taken on Friday.
The dress was then left in a garment carrier inside a rubbish bag at the hotel off Sunset Boulevard on Saturday.
The Los Angeles followed a tip given off to gossip site TMZ, which said they were contacted by a man who claimed to have stolen the designer long gown.
The thief explained that he returned the dress after learning that the pearls studding the custom-made dress were actually fake after conducting a test on two of the pearls.
While detectives are still working with the owners of the dress to confirm the authenticity of the dress, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Lt. Michael White believed the dress was real.
"Whether the jewels on the dress are fake or real... we still have a burglary and we still have a grand theft,'' White said, according to BBC.
Nyong'o wore the dress in the 2015 Oscar Awards as presenter. She won the best supporting actress for "12 Years a Slave" during last year's Oscars.
Her white dress became an instant hit in this year's Oscars when the actress described the gown in an interview with Yahoo!
"We talked about it being fluid and liquid. I wanted it to be an homage to the sea," she said before it was reported stolen from her room at the London Hotel last Wednesday.
"It was so much fun to create this dress," she remarked.
Arrests have yet to be made.
