'Making a Murderer' season 2 spoilers news 2016: New episodes announced by Netflix
"Making a Murderer," the true crime documentary series that was first streamed by Netflix in December 2015, is returning for more episodes.
On Tuesday, July 19, the streaming service announced that it has ordered more episodes of the docuseries for a second chapter that will follow Steven Avery's post-conviction life.
The first season of "Making a Murderer" followed Avery's arrest, trial and conviction for the murder of Teresa Halbach, a photographer from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Brendan Dassey, Avery's nephew, was also convicted as an accessory to the crime.
According to Netflix, "Making a Murderer" executive producers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, who also penned and directed the docuseries, are returning for the new season.
"We are extremely grateful for the tremendous response to, and support of, the series," Ricciardo and Demos said in a statement. "The viewers' interest and attention has ensured that the story is not over, and we are fully committed to continuing to document events as they unfold."
"Because of Ricciardi's and Demos' incredible vision, commitment and keen eye, audiences around the globe became completely captivated by the personal stories of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey and the unique lens their experiences provide into the criminal justice system," Lisa Nishimura, Netflix's vice president for original documentary programming, said about the show's additional episodes.
The new episodes of "Making a Murderer" will reportedly offer viewers a deeper look at the post-conviction process and the emotional toll of the process on everyone involved. They will also provide input from Kathleen Zellner, Avery's new lawyer, and from Dassey's new legal team, which is led by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin.
Netflix's announcement came just days after "Making a Murderer" earned six Emmy nominations, including that for Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Series.
Production on the new episodes has begun, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Netflix is yet to announce the official release date for the new episodes of "Making A Murderer."
