Manhunt Continues After Two NYPD Officers Shot
A manhunt is on in New York City after two suspects allegedly shot and wounded two policemen who were responding to a robbery in the city's Bronx borough.
The incident took place Monday evening at around 10:30 p.m., when the two officers, whose names have not been released, responded to a robbery at a grocery store on 184th Street in the Bronx.
The two police and other officers arrived at the grocery store shortly after the two suspects had fled. The two suspects were then reportedly spotted hiding by a nearby Chinese restaurant, and exchanged fire with the officers.
Both officers, ages 30 and 38, are being kept at a local hospital in stable condition, with one sustaining gunshot wounds to his arm and lower back, while the other received wounds in his chest and back.
Police are now searching for the two suspects, one of whom they believe may have been wounded in the exchange of gunfire.
"They went above and beyond the call to protect their fellow New Yorkers. Thank God the officers are doing well and will recover," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement to reporters following Monday's incident.
New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito said in a statement that she hopes the two wounded officers make a speedy recovery.
"Every day, New York's police officers risk their lives keeping New Yorkers safe and we are very grateful for their service, dedication and commitment," she said.
The recent shootout comes after two New York City Police Officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, were killed on December 20 while sitting in their patrol car. The two officers were reportedly killed by a suspect who blamed local officials on the death of unarmed black men Michael Brown and Eric Gardner earlier this year.
